Winter Tax Bill Update
We identified an error in the recently mailed Winter Tax Bills. Specifically, an incorrect levy was posted for Benzie Transportation Authority for its levy on the 2025 Winter Tax Bill, causing an over levy. Because of this mistake, the bill you received asks you to pay too much (an overcharge or “over levy”) for that specific transportation tax. This mistake has been corrected and a revised tax bill will be sent with “Revised” indicated at the top of the tax bill.
Please know that our primary duty is to serve you, our community, with transparency, integrity and accuracy. Operating in the best interest of every property owner is not just a policy - it is the guiding principle of our office. Discovering that this error occurred is profoundly disappointing to us and we are committed to resolving it promptly.
Our Immediate Action Plan
- Reprinting and Re-mailing: To ensure every resident receives an accurate statement, we are immediately re-printing and will re-mail new Winter Tax Bills to all property owners.
These corrected bills will reflect the appropriate and accurate levy amount for the Benzie Transportation Authority. We anticipate the corrected bills will be in your mailboxes within two weeks of today’s date.
- Refunds for Overpayments: For any taxpayer who has already remitted payment based on the original, incorrect bill, we are taking immediate action:
- If your payment exceeded the appropriate, correct tax amount, the difference will be refunded to you expediently through your local taxing authority. You do not need to take any further action to initiate this refund. Our team is prioritizing processing these refunds without delay.
We recognize that this error creates confusion and demands extra time from you, and for that, we offer our most sincere apologies. Your trust is the foundation of our work, and we are dedicated to earning and maintaining it through diligent correction and open communication.
Benzie County will continue to work together with local taxing authorities to tighten processes in an effort to avoid similar circumstances in the future.
